Cause of Color

For decades, GIA researchers who study diamonds and have access to the finest equipment still aren't sure what is causing them to turn red. GIA believes the color origin could be its relation to pink diamonds. The process for the formation of "pink and red" diamonds in the earth differs substantially according to the color defect. Twisted alignment in the carbon atoms is the leading cause for their cause of color, however this is not 100% confirmed according to the Gemological Institute of America. The scientific gemological term that describes this phenomena is called “atomic distortion. The arrangements of the atoms in the crystal are determined by the heat and pressure in the earth. This is the same structural anomaly that causes a purple and brown diamond. Red diamonds can be identified as Fancy red, Fancy purplish red, Fancy Orangy Red, Fancy Brownish Red with one color being highest value.

How RARE

"Red" means the primary color of red is not secondary (like purple). In fact, the red diamonds are so rare that according to GIA records, no mention of a GIA laboratory report for a "red" diamond was issued as the only description term over a 30 year period from 1957 to 1987. These are incredibly rare. Red diamonds are average to be less than 1 ct in size with the largest red diamond found to be 5 carats.

red diamond origin

The majority of Red Diamonds come from Australia, particularly from the Argyle Diamond Mine, famous for the world's best pink, violet, blue and brown diamonds. In some cases, red diamonds have been found in small areas in South America, parts of Russia and in India. The Argyle diamond mine, located in the remote east of Kimberley, Western Australia, is the primary origin of these red diamonds. The mine has been in operation since 1983 and has produced rough diamonds with over 800 million carats. It is one of the world's largest diamond suppliers and the world's leading natural diamond supplier. More than 90% of natural pink diamonds are produced in the world by the Argyle mine. The supply of these rare pink stones can fit in the hands of one person throughout the whole year and weighs less than 10 percent above 0.20 a carat. Red diamonds were also occasionally discovered with around only 20 red diamonds found from this mine in its lifetime.

Historic Red Diamonds

One of the most well-known red diamonds is the Hancock Red. It was the most costly per carat gemstone ever auctioned when it was priced in 1987. The hammer was down to 880, 000.00 dollars, a phenomenal average of 926,315 dollars a carat 8 times its pre-sale.
