Cause of color

What causes the brown color? According to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) the cause of color is due to distortion of the crystal lattice (molecular arrangement), the color in natural brown diamonds is caused by inner parallel brown grain lines. The diamond is composed of compound elements and may or may not contain impurities, all of which may influence the stone's visual appearance. The element responsible for yellow or brownish coloring is nitrogen, an impurity contained in yellow diamonds. A brown diamond also gets much of its distinctive color from the light absorbed by structural defects in the crystal.

origin of Brown Diamonds

Brown diamonds are found in many parts of the world such as Africa, Brazil, Russia and also from the Argyle mine in Western Australia, the same mine that produces 90% of the worlds natural pink diamonds. The sizes that these diamonds can range from a few carats to over 100 carats in size.
